“My son was 14 when I fled to the neighbours for help. His father had never hurt him, but it was terrible, terrifying to leave him behind, I could not sleep for days. Then my son chose to leave and live with me.
It would not have been possible to keep him with me if I’d gone to a shelter. Our RISE2 home was ready, furnished and even had books and games he loved, waiting for him.
I cannot say thank you enough to the many people in the community who made our new life possible, so quickly and safely. My son is doing well now in school, thanks to our support worker, and I’m going to study to be a nurse. We have a whole new life.”
“When I was living in the refuge I didn’t know where I would end up next. Before that, I was living in Brisbane in government housing and having no luck getting a transfer anywhere out of Brisbane, which was a scary thought – I didn’t want to keep staying near the city as it wasn’t safe and felt too risky.
My worker at Shine referred me to the RISE program, which I had never heard of. I was lucky enough to get a furnished property through RISE, which meant I could completely relocate to the coast, where it would be safer for me and my son. I am so grateful for the opportunity to have transitional housing after going through so much and being so worried for so long.
The property was beautiful and in a nice location where I knew we would be safe. The Coast2Bay staff were very supportive and understanding. I was overwhelmed and happy on the day we moved in, and surprised to find gifts and food hampers when we moved in, which really helped us as I was struggling at the time.
It just felt good to have a safe space to call home and know I was supported and that people care.
I now have long term housing on the coast and everything I went through in Brisbane is a distant memory and I am so very lucky and grateful for the opportunity from RISE.”

”I was always told he would make me homeless with my babies if I was to leave… As a DV Victim Survivor, that word Homeless still shakes me down to the inner core and triggers so much trauma it’s un-imaginable, but through such a program made possible through Coast2 Bay and RISE, the impact this has had on my resilience through hell has enabled me to not be completely destroyed by my DV perpetrator.
It has given myself and my children safety, stability, strength for a fresh start and to help build trust in humankind again.“
